A 19-year-old hacker was arrested in the west of the Netherlands by local police. He is suspected of hacking systems and stealing tens of thousands of documents by Karenzorgt.nl – the Dutch portal of medical services. Karenzorgt is used by 9,023 medical facilities and almost half a million users. The portal allows patients to make an appointment, communicate with the attending physician and store all their medical data in one place.

According to a statement by Nedap, which discovered the activities of a young cybercriminal, stolen documents could contain personal and medical data from patients from various institutions. However, it is still unknown whether the hacker shared the stolen or tried to sell everything to other hackers as soon as possible.

The police went on the trail of the attacker after receiving a message from Karenzorgt and is currently studying evidence gathered during an arrest in the suspect’s house.

According to Nedap in her press release, she became aware of her vulnerability at Karenzorgt on October 17, 2026, after which the company’s specialists immediately closed the gap in the defense and engaged in investigating the possible consequences of its use. Thanks to this, they managed to find out that she was recently used by a cybercriminal to steal documents stored by Karenzorgt.

An alarming find forced Nedap to go to law enforcement and warn the security services of medical facilities using the hacked portal about the incident.

There is good news – the company’s specialists have not yet found any evidence that the stolen documents were merged into the network, but an investigation on this issue is still ongoing.
