Today, in the Brazilian city of Feira de Santana, local police arrested one of the potential members of the Lapsus ransomware group $. The suspect was detained as part of an investigation launched in December 2021 after last year’s hacking by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. Then the hackers laid down all the sites of the Brazilian Ministry of Health, including ConecteSUS, which tracks the trajectory of citizens in the public health system. Among other things, users have lost access to their digital vaccination certificates for COVID-19 through the ConecteSUS application. In addition, the group stole 50 TB of data from the Ministry of Health and deleted them.

The arrest of the suspect – is the result of an entire operation called “ Dark Cloud ”, launched in August this year. Its goal is to collect information about the activities of the group, which has attacked Brazilian government agencies many times last year. In addition to the Ministry of Health, hackers attacked dozens of other federal Brazilian institutions, including the Ministry of Economy and the Federal Highway Police.

The Brazilian Federal Police said the following crimes were identified during the investigation:
  • Organization of the criminal community;
  • Illegal access to computer information;
  • Interrupting or violating telegraph, radio telegraph or telephone communications, as well as preventing its recovery.
  • The corruption of minors;
  • Money laundering.
Recall that earlier there were arrests of other members of Lapsus $. In March of this year, London police arrested seven alleged Lapsus $ members. And more recently, a 17-year-old hacker appeared in court, arrested on suspicion of hacking Rockstar Games and Uber.
